Description
Fine 1896 sailing trophy owned by a victim of the Titanic sinking. Made in London in 1895 by the firm of William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman. Their mark on this piece seems to be an undocumented one featuring Langman’s middle initial. It is the “Rear Commodores Prize” won during 1896’s Thames Sailing Clubs competition. The claret jug is fully hallmarked sterling silver on cut glass. It’s preserved in wonderful condition minus the chips on the glass base. I purchased this and two other sterling silver sailing trophies directly from descendent of the original owner. The story goes that they were saved from the basement of a building that was bombed out during the German bombing of London in WWII. The original owner never had his name engraved on the trophy after winning it. It was common at that point to be given your award on the day of the event. You would then take it in to be personalized at a later date. This gentlemen never did that. The piece is a good size at 11” from base to finial. This is a special piece and I would love to see it go to a great home. I’ll ship FREE, ASAP! ThanksHappy to provide the name of the original owner who perished in the Titanic sinking to the new owner of this trophy once it’s been paid for.
