    Description

    ENGLISH STERLING SILVER WINE DECANTER
    HORACE WOODWARD & Co 1902
Pleased to offer this splendid example of an English sterling silver & crystal wine decanter made by the well regarded silversmiths Horace Woodward.
This tall decanter with banded style handle, and detailed sterling repousse is typical to the period 1870-1910. This design & style were made by a number of English silversmiths.  The decanter's design is consistent with what it was used for, and has a theme of Bacchus, the god of wine. A grape and leaf pattern carries throughout the silverwork at the top of the decanter, as well as, the figural cover. There are two maidens heads entwined within the grape & leaves on each side. The pour spout bears the head of Bacchus. A plain sterling "S" shaped handle connects to the scircular band at the base of the decanter. A silver figural lion rampant displaying a shield stands atop the raised circular cover (with blank cartouche)
This impressive decanter stands 11 1/2 inches tall and is 5 inches wide at the base.  The length from handle to spout is 6 1/2 inches.  The majority of the 845 grams in weight is in the crystal and not in the sterling silver. In most excellent condition, displaying no dents, dings, cracks, chips, splits, repairs or damage of any kind.  Punched with the makers mark of HW & Co Ltd. within a quatrofoil, for Horace Woodward & Company Limited. Lion passant for assayed English sterling, Leopards head for London, and date letter of 'g" for 1902.  The decanter stands firm & level. The handle tight & secure with no play.
