Description
You are bidding for a hard to find early large compound microscope by Andrew Ross of London, serial #1945 probably dating circa 1850-55.
Engraved around the tube "Wenham`s Binocular by Ross"
Engraved on the base in lovely script "Ross London 1945".
This has come straight from an estate sale and as such, no attempt has been made to clean it, therefore there will be marks/wear to the brass.
Binocular Microscope Stand with two "B" eye-pieces, coarse and fine adjustments for focusing, mechanical stage having 1-inch of rectangular motion,
rotating slide platform for full positioning of the slide
all work freely, mechanical sub-stage designed for holding illuminating and polarizing apparatus.
The plane and concave mirror comes to you in very good condition.
The objective is a Swift & Son London 2/3" N.A 0.28 which comes to you in excellent condition.
Retracted height is approximately 20".
There is no case.

Andrew Ross (1798–1859) was a well known and respected optician and instrument maker in London during the first quarter of the 19th Century. He began his career in 1813 by apprenticing to John Corless. In 1830 he separated from Corless and started his own business, much of the time in partnership with Joseph J. Lister. His company "Andrew Ross & Co." made a number of optical instruments including telescopes, however, he became well known for the quality of his achromatic lenses and high-quality microscopes. Ross introduced a number of improvements to compound microscopes, especially due to his collaboration with J.J. Lister in creating achromatic objectives. Ross' last instrument won first place at the Great Exibition of 1851. In 1830 he received the Gold Isis Medal from the Society of Arts for his improved dividing astronomical and mathematical instruments and for his circular dividing engine. He received the same medal in 1836 for his improvements in achromatic objectives of microscopes. In 1841 he received a silver medal from the Society for his invention of the spherometer*. He separated from Lister c1842 and moved to 21 Featherstone Buildings, Holborn.
Ross was a founding member of the Microscopical Society of London, which later became the Royal Microscopical Society. Ross made microscopes from 1831 through 1859, after which the company became "Ross & Co." under the direction of his son Thomas. Thomas' company continued making lenses under the "Ross" name until it merged with Barnet Ensign in 1948. In 1975 the company finally lost the "Ross" name when it was absorbed by first Avimo then eventually Thales Optics.

We try to be as flexible as possible and offer the following methods of payment. Cheques (GBP£ only), Postal Orders & Paypal. Although we agree it is convenient, Paypal is a costly method, to us, of accepting payment so if you can at all possibly use one of the first mentioned 3 choices we would be grateful but it is the customer’s choice and we thank you for which ever payment method you decide to use.
We prefer personal cheque as a method of payment from UK based customers but sadly this facility is not available to overseas buyers because of excessive bank charges we incur for handling cheques outside the UK.
Most of our items will show a recorded option price and a special delivery price for UK customers. As long as the item is sent by a method which requires a signature on delivery we do try to be as flexible as possible. For overseas buyers all goods will be sent via Royal Mail International Signed For. Some items will show an optional choice for insurance. The overseas price may be seen as no price given, This will only happen if an item weighs in excess of 2Kg as the price at this weight bracket is determined by Geographical location so if interested please contact us for a quote to your country of residence.
At checkout, if you have bought more than one item please wait until we send you an invoice as we always combine postage costs. We want you to be happy and return again and again which is something we feel the customer will not do if they feel they have been grossly or unfairly charged for postage. Please note under no circumstances will we send any goods by international surface mail. Nor will we send to an address if paid by Paypal which is not the registered address through Paypal.
We regularly have customers buying/winning an itm but wish to wait a little longer before settling their bill as they may want to bid on further items, This is not a problem what so ever. Just drop us a quick note saying you wish to delay your payment as you intend to purchase further goods. We will send you a combined invoice when you are finished purchasing.
