    Description

    Item:
Alvin Lead Glass Octagonal Neck Decanter with Silver Overlay and Stopper - c. 1910. Colorless lead glass with cut glass starburst base, polished. Silvered Engraved. The decanter a bulbous spherical shape with a long rounded-octagonal neck. Body covered in silver which has been cut away into large rounded flowering foliage and centering cartouche, monogrammed. Separate stopper covered in silver engraved in matching pattern. Original. This container is from the early 1900's. It was fashioned by hand with a sharply defined starburst pattern etched into the glass with a grinding wheel and polished to make it sparkle in the manner of a multitude of prisms. I acquired this at an estate sale as Alvin Co. Furthermore, it may be confidently attributed to Alvin Co., New York City, based on a photograph of a variety of decanter container highlighted in a website created by Georgio B in www.silvercollection.it (see Alvin Corporation: history and marks). The only mark in the glass is at the base of its stopper; number 46, 6 and esoteric symbol.
