HISTORY:
Mayor Sutro’s
main objections were submitted as follows: First— This tract is the geographical center of San Francisco, and the winds blowing from the west, almost during the whole year, will scatter disease germs over the thickly settled Mission country and South San Francisco, etc., etc.; The Mayor’s concerns based on this document were discussed in the San Francisco Call, Volume 79, Number 63, 1 February 1896 and it was noted that Mayor Sutro would likely veto the measure and there would not be enough votes to override it [Sutro was obviously protecting his own land holdings from “The Alms House Tract” location for the “Pest House”].
